Shuttle Atlantis STS-132 - Amazing Shuttle Launch Experience

Kennedy Space Center, May 14th, 2010.
I was privileged to travel to the Kennedy Space Center, to watch the launch of Atlantis, on what was then, the final "scheduled" flight of the orbiter (STS-132). This video is my homage to the shuttle program, through the in-depth experience of a single orbiter launch. I believe we should be thankful for the Atlantis orbiter, all her astronauts, the countless NASA staff who made her fly, and the American people who created a space vehicle of extraordinary power and grace.

This footage incorporates numerous camera views from the ground, the footage I took during launch, and video and audio from NASA showing the orbiter stack itself, during takeoff and flight -- in order to experience the preparation and the resulting eight and a half minute exhilarating ride into space.

In places, the timeline of the actual events has been extended slightly to allow us to see different viewpoints of the same moment, and better experience the amazing feat of launching a spacecraft into orbit.

Enjoy the ride!

After this flight, Atlantis was processed and prepared to fly one last time... this time as "on-call" STS-335, which would remain flight-ready, should either of the remaining two orbiters flights require a rescue mission.

A rescue flight was not needed and Congress, in a rare moment of clarity, appropriated enough money to extend the program to allow the already "flight ready" Atlantis to launch one last time and to become the last shuttle mission of the Shuttle Program, as STS-135.

Atlantis now has a home at the Kennedy Space Center.

Errata: an editing error at the end of the video states the launch was 2012, rather than the correct year, 2010.

There are not many videos of it because it intentionally occurs far from anyone. STS 41 allowed the tank to re-enter near hawaii and some footage was captured: www.airspacemag.com/videos/sts-41c-shuttle-external-tank-breakup-over-h_1/

@19:50...... Am I crazy or are there multiple UFOs all over the place. I understand there's debris etc. But these things are just slowly spinning. Right in the middle of the screen.. come down... Hang out for a few seconds and then when it splits off. They all seem to actively take off...... I re watched it many times. In slow motion... I'd love to hear other thoughts or explanations

@10:57 it's cool how you can see the stars appearing randomly. Or sometimes you can see a couple together. And then they disappear. Love space.

@Chris B. My friends or family sometimes show me a video and ask what I think on this same topic. While I'm no expert, in pretty much every instance the dots and objects moving are ices and other off-gassing that results from the craft's operation. You can see these effects very frequently during SpaceX launches because they use high-resolution cameras/video feeds. The tricky thing is that in videos from space or during launches, we do not have the normal spatial references which give us clues as to the actual direction of travel for both the object and the camera, true sizes, nor distances of objects. This 'can' lead to some behavior that appears strange... similar to how a moon on the horizon seems so much bigger than normal. I think it's great to ask questions, and yes, NOsections commenters are often trolls or just rude. Keep on asking questions, and studying information from reputable sources!

@Jonathan Mickelson thank you. I'm finding this stuff to be very interesting. I know it sounds face very interesting as a kid. And now with all the technology we have recently become more interested. And thanks for actually explaining something. Unlike the other douchebag who just insisted I read something something for dummies and then I'm allowed to comment. I find it weird how a lot of videos from the live stream when they are deep and space and there's nothing but black in the background that they are constantly things moving around in the back or shooting across the screen. I understand that there is space debris and all that especially during second and third phases when they launch. What are the things that start moving one way stop and then go off into another direction? I've also noticed that a lot of the debris or whatever it may be 10 to almost stay in a triangular formation and move at the same speed. Not sure if you know the answers to any of those questions. If you happen to have any free time. One of the live streams there was a point where they were showing the lights from one of . And on the right side of the screen there is a few lights that move down and an object comes into view that resembles a spaceship / spacecraft. It almost reminds me of a horseshoe crab. And you can see through it is that some sort of reflection? It moves at a different speed than the two lights are. Not trying to get all crazy and conspiracy theorist on you but theorist on you but you seem very knowledgeable

It is an amazing universe we live in! I must correct you though, during 10:57, you are not seeing stars. At that point in the flight, the orbiter is rotating into the heads-down position, and the changing direction of sunlight is glinting off irregularities in the glass, and possibly some condensation. As you can see, the sky is still blue because they had just lifted off. The orbiter is still relatively close to the ground, at that point, ie. not even to the height of a commercial airliner. It isn't until much later in the flight that the atmosphere is thin and the "sky" is dark enough for stars to be seen... but even then, it would only be possible to see stars if your eyes (or camera shutter speeds) were adjusted to see the faint light from stars, which they generally wouldn't be because astronauts are working, and have lights inside the orbiter cabin.

Growing up in the West back in the early 80's we were forced to watch every space shuttle launch from a large t.v on wheels ( probably nasa(h) funded). We had a Christian teacher who always stated that nobody could go beyond the sky above but we all thought he was crazy as we witnessed the EVENT's live on t.v (lie). Well 2012 I found out it was one big hoax!
